ASW use the geographic themes of location and place to describe the setting and culture represented in the folktales.
ASW identify the type of folktale represented by the story.
ASW recognize and describe character traits that are valued in the culture.
ASW explain how folktales teach by explaining the moral or lesson to be learned in the folktale.
ASW show appreciation for the African oral tradition of storytelling
Methods & Procedures:
Students will be introduced to the art of storytelling in Africa. They will be introduced to the character Kwaku Anansi. Students along with the teacher will read a variety of African folktales. Afterwards students will be prompted to discuss the moral or lesson in each of the folktales.
The teacher will then enact one of the folktales the students have read.

Content Standard 1: All students will read and comprehend general and technical material. Benchmark 5 - Respond to a variety of oral, visual, written, and electronic texts by making connections to their personal lives and the lives of others.
Content Standard 3: All students will focus on meaning and communication as they listen, speak, view, read, and write in personal, social, occupational, and civic contexts. Benchmark 4 - Practice verbal and nonverbal strategies that enhance understanding of spoken messages and promote effective listening behaviors. Examples include altering inflection, volume, and rate, using evidence, and reasoning.

individuality, our common heritage and common humanity, and the rich diversity in our society. Benchmark 2 - Describe and discuss shared issues in the human experience that appear in literature and other texts from around the world. Examples include quests for happiness and service to others.
